About Strawberry Smoothie

This Strawberry Smoothie recipe is definitely one of my favorites, especially during the warmer months. Refreshing smoothies with strawberries are rich, creamy and bursting with the bright flavor of fresh strawberries.

I also add a banana to make a thick and milkshake-like consistency. Plus it adds another pop of healthy sweetness to the drink that is great to get your morning going!

When making a smoothie with bananas, I prefer to use coconut milk or almond milk. Using plant-based milks makes this a tasty vegan smoothie recipe, and is a bit easier on your stomach.

I have read that according to Ayurveda, eating certain fruits and dairy milk together can create all kinds of digestion problems.

For instance, banana and dairy tend to cause gut issues. However, I always find that beverages made with coconut milk or almond milk are lighter and easy to digest.

I have not used any sweetener in this 3 ingredient smoothie recipe, but you can add some sweetener if your strawberries aren’t quite ripe or you prefer a sweeter smoothie.

How to Make Strawberry Smoothie

1. First you need to rinse, hull and chop 200 grams of fresh strawberries. This is about 1.25 cups of chopped strawberries. You can also use frozen strawberries if you’d like to make a thicker strawberry smoothie.

Add the fresh or frozen strawberries to a blender jar.

2. Then chop and add 1 medium to large banana.

3. Pour in ½ cup of lite coconut milk (not the thick cream). For a thicker smoothie you can add ¼ to ⅓ cup of lite coconut milk. Feel free to add any preferred plant based milk.

You also can add a sweetener, like raw sugar, palm sugar, coconut sugar or maple syrup, if you like.

4. Place the lid on the jar and blend until smooth and creamy. If the smoothie is a bit too thick, add a splash of coconut milk and blend again.

Serving Suggestions

Pour into two glasses and serve the Strawberry Smoothie straight away. I suggest you garnish the glasses with some sliced strawberries or chopped nuts or dry fruits.

I recommend to drink the freshly blended smoothie as soon as it is made for the best flavor and taste.

Since coconut milk is used in the recipe, it will get rancid if kept at room temperature for a few hours in a warm temperature. It can also get rancid in the fridge.

Expert Tips

  1. Without banana: I include a banana in my recipe for the flavor and to thicken the smoothie. But you can leave it out, if you prefer. Simply add in some more strawberries to replace the banana or use pulpy, creamy fruits like a ripe mango or avocado.
  2. For a thicker smoothie: Add a few ice cubes or use frozen strawberries or frozen bananas. You also can use frozen bagged strawberries to make an icy cold Strawberry Smoothie. You could also use thick coconut milk or swap with some coconut cream or opt to add ¼ to ⅓ cup of the lite coconut milk.
  3. Sweetener: You can add any sweetener of your choice. Like raw sugar, palm sugar, maple syrup, jaggery or coconut sugar. But give the smoothie a try as-is first, since you might be surprised how naturally sweet the strawberries and banana are together.
  4. Choice of milk: It is best to make this smoothie with coconut milk or any plant based milk. I would not suggest using a dairy-based milk, as bananas and dairy milk don’t go well together, according to Ayurveda. However, you can still prepare this smoothie with dairy milk, once a while but not always or every day.
  5. Scaling: This smoothie is enough for 2 servings. However, you can easily double or triple the ingredients to make for 4 to 6 servings.

FAQs

How can I make this a thicker strawberry smoothie?

Add a few ice cubes or flash freeze the cut pieces of strawberries before blending to thicken the smoothie a bit.

Place the sliced strawberries on a lined baking sheet and freeze for one hour to flash freeze them. You also can use frozen bagged strawberries to make an icy cold strawberry smoothie.

Can I use frozen strawberries or frozen banana?

Yes of course. You can use either or both to make a creamy and thick smoothie. If the smoothie becomes too thick for your liking, add in a splash of coconut milk.

Can I add some flavorings to the smoothie like vanilla extract?

Sure. Flavoring ingredients like vanilla, ground cinnamon and ground green cardamom can be added.

Can I use dairy milk to make this strawberry banana smoothie recipe?

I would not recommend to include dairy milk in this recipe due to the bananas. Both bananas and milk are an incompatible pairing according to Ayurveda. Though once in a while, you can have this strawberry smoothie made with dairy milk, but not everyday.

Ingredients

  • 1.25 cups chopped strawberries – 200 grams
  • ½ cup Coconut Milk – lite or with a thin/medium consistency
  • 1 banana – medium to large

  • Pour in glasses and serve strawberry smoothie straight away. Opt to serve the smoothie as it or top with some strawberry slices or chopped nuts.

  • Vice versa for thicker smoothie, add about ¼ to ⅓ cup of the lite coconut milk.
  • For garnish either top with fresh strawberry slices or slivered nuts like almonds or pistachios. 
  • If you do not have bananas, double or triple the amount of strawberries or add a creamy and pulpy fruit like a ripe mango or avocado.
  • Swap coconut milk with almond milk, cashew milk, GMO free soy milk, oats milk or your preferred plant based milk. 
  • You could also make this smoothie with milk or yogurt but enjoy it once a while and not everyday.
  • Feel free to flavor the smoothie with either vanilla or ground cinnamon or ground green cardamom. 
  • Scale the recipe easily to make for more servings.

Suvidha, you can use but don’t have everyday. according to ayurveda, certain fruits and milk are an incompatible combination and lead to digestion problems. since i have used bananas here i have not added milk. if you plan to have fruit smoothies everyday, then its better to use almond milk or thin or light coconut milk.
